Tuesday, April 17, 2012

statue of libertyDiabetes patients living in New York and taking Actos, should be made aware that in June 2011, results from a French epidemiological study revealed that use of the diabetes drug Actos (pioglitazone) led to a higher risk of developing bladder cancer. The data prompted France to pull the drug and Germany to halt new prescriptions of the popular diabetes medication. In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a public health announcement warning diabetes patients that prolonged use and cumulative doses of Actos could lead to the life-threatening disease.

The study showed that prolonged use of pioglitazone (the main ingredient in Actos) increased the risk of developing bladder cancer by 40 percent. Higher doses of the drug also led to a higher risk of the disease, researchers found.

If you are a resident of New York and have taken or are taking Actos medication, it is important to understand the signs and symptoms of bladder cancer. If you are concerned about the possible bladder cancer risk associated with Actos, the FDA is recommending you talk to your health care professional right away.
