Texas - Actos Bladder Cancer Information
Friday, April 13, 2012
This is an alert to diabetes patients in Texas that Pioglitazone, the main ingredient in the diabetes drug Actos, has been linked to a 40 percent increased risk of developing bladder cancer.
Data from a study released in June 2011 revealed that prolonged use as well as high doses of Actos medication was linked to bladder cancer, prompting both France and Germany to ban new prescriptions of pioglitazone-containing drugs.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an investigation into the data and released a public health advisory recommending that Actos drug labeling include information on the cancer risk. The health agency, however, has not pulled the drug from the market.
The FDA did encourage diabetes patients who take Actos to become aware of common bladder cancer symptoms. The agency also recommended that patients with a history of bladder cancer not take the medication.
